A garage-side wall section with 400 sq ft of net area, 10% waste, and 30 sq ft panel coverage:

Panel count, carton count and piece count aren’t the same number
Panel siding is ordered three different ways, and mixing them up is the main source of over- and under-buying. Vinyl is usually sold by the carton, which holds a set number of panels. Metal is often sold by the panel, sometimes cut to your length. And some suppliers quote a piece count for trim-like accessories. Decide which unit your supplier uses before you read the result. Panel length is the other variable. Horizontal vinyl panels typically run 12 ft, which means most walls need joints. Where a wall is longer than one panel, panels overlap at the ends, staggered so the joints don’t line up on adjacent courses. Vertical metal panels may run the full height of the wall in one piece, so there’s no end overlap but a bigger penalty for a wrong cut. See the metal siding calculator for width-based counting.
Trim isn’t part of a panel count. The panel estimate here covers the field of the wall, and you’ll separately need starter strip, corners, J-channel and window and door trim. Those are covered by the starter strip, corner post and J-channel calculators.

How many siding panels do I need?

Does this work for both vinyl and metal panels?
Yes — select your material under "Siding material" and adjust the coverage per unit to match your specific panel or carton.
Is a panel the same as a carton?
No. A carton contains several panels (vinyl), while a metal panel may be sold individually. Use the coverage per unit your supplier lists.
How do panel overlaps affect my order?
Overlap is already built into published coverage numbers, so use the coverage listed for your product rather than the raw panel size.
