How Many Squares and Pieces Are in a Box of Siding?

Siding is priced in squares, sold in boxes (cartons), and installed as pieces. The confusion comes from switching between the three. This guide lines them up so you can read a quote or a product label without second-guessing the math.
What is a siding square?
A siding square is 100 square feet of wall coverage. It does not matter whether the siding is vinyl, fiber cement, wood or metal; a square is always 100 sq ft. Contractors use it because it makes prices comparable across products with different panel sizes.
- 1 square = 100 sq ft
- 10 squares = 1,000 sq ft
- 17.4 squares = 1,740 sq ft

How much siding is in a box?
Coverage per box depends on the product, so the carton label is the source of truth. Typical starting points:

How many pieces are in a square?
Divide 100 by the coverage of a single piece. Coverage per piece is length times exposure (the visible height), converted to feet.
- Vinyl double-4 panel, 12.5 ft long with 8 in exposure: 12.5 × 8 ÷ 12 = 8.3 sq ft, so about 12 panels per square.
- Vinyl double-5 panel, 12.5 ft long with 10 in exposure: about 10.4 sq ft, so about 10 panels per square.
- Fiber cement lap, 12 ft long at 7 in exposure: 12 × 7 ÷ 12 = 7 sq ft, so about 14 boards per square.

Turning squares into boxes
- Find net area and add waste (how to calculate siding).
- Divide by the box coverage.
- Round up to a whole box.
Example: 872 sq ft required with vinyl cartons covering 200 sq ft each: 872 ÷ 200 = 4.36, so order 5 boxes. Rounding up matters because a partial box is not available, and it gives a little cushion on top of your waste allowance.
Also match dye lots. Buy everything for the project in one order when you can, since color can vary slightly between production runs.
How many nails per square?
For vinyl, panels are fastened roughly every 16 inches along the nailing hem. With about 12 panels per square, that is a bit over 100 nails per square, before counting trim. Nail lengths and placement are set by the manufacturer, and vinyl needs to move with temperature, so nails should sit in the center of the slot and not be driven tight. Always follow the installation instructions for your specific product.
