Where your inputs should come from
A cost estimate is only as good as its prices, and this calculator uses the ones you type in, so it’s worth gathering them properly. Material prices come from a supplier quote or product listing. Ask whether the price is per square (100 sq ft), per carton, per board or per square foot, and enter it in the matching unit; the wrong unit is the most common error. The cost per square guide shows how to convert. Labor prices come from installer quotes and are usually quoted per square or as a lump sum for the job.
A proper contractor quote lists what’s included: siding, trim, house wrap and flashing, removal and disposal, permits, and any repair allowance. Two quotes can differ by thousands of dollars purely because one includes items the other leaves out. Use the breakdown here to line quotes up item by item before you compare totals.
Use the contingency field for the unknowns. A contingency of 5–10% is common on a straightforward exterior. You’ll want a bit more if the house is older, if the structure hasn’t been inspected behind the siding, or if details like extra corners and dormers could add cutting.

Should I enter price per square or per square foot?
Either works as long as you match the unit your supplier or installer used. A square is 100 sq ft, so $450 per square equals $4.50 per sq ft.
How do I compare two contractor quotes?
Break both into siding, trim, wrap and flashing, removal, permits and repairs. Then check that each includes the same items before comparing the totals.
