An ordering checklist that goes beyond the siding itself
The unit count from this calculator is the start of an order, not the whole order. Before you buy, list everything the wall needs. Weather barrier: house wrap or building paper, plus seam tape (see the house wrap calculator). Flashing: at windows, doors and where siding meets a roof. Trim: starter strip, corners, window and door casing, and fascia. Fasteners: matched to the material (for example stainless or galvanized for cedar, corrosion-resistant for fiber cement). Sealant and touch-up: caulk and paint for cut edges where the material calls for it.
Then sanity-check your numbers. Compare the unit count to your area: if the calculator says 60 units at 15 sq ft each, that should be about 900 sq ft including waste. If it doesn’t, one of the fields (exposure, coverage or pieces per unit) is probably off. Switching the material dropdown is the quickest way to spot this, because a wildly different unit count between two similar materials usually means a wrong default.
Order at once rather than in stages when you can. Products are made in lots, and finish or color can differ slightly between them. Keep the receipt and lot numbers, and ask your supplier about return policies for unopened cartons before you commit.
